escape sequence

escape sequence
A sequence of characters, beginning with Escape (ASCII 27) and followed by one or more other characters, that performs a specific function. Sometimes called an escape code. Escape sequences are often used to control printers or monitors, which treat them as commands and act upon them rather than processing them as characters to print or display.
